Common Fleas Found in San Diego, CA

Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides Felis)

San Diego homes are often plagued by cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis), reddish-brown parasites about 1/8 inch long that infest cats and dogs. Fleas feed on the blood of pets, causing itching, hair loss, and anemia in severe cases. They can also bite humans, resulting in red, itchy welts that may cause allergic reactions.

The flea’s life cycle includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female fleas lay between 20-50 eggs daily, which fall into carpets and bedding. Larvae feed on organic material and thrive in humid environments. The full life cycle takes about 18 days, with adult fleas living up to 40 days on their host.

Dog fleas (C. Canis)

Ctenocephalides canis, commonly known as dog fleas, are parasitic insects that primarily infest dogs but can also bite humans and cats. Less common in California than cat fleas, they still cause issues. These tiny, reddish-brown, wingless fleas are difficult to spot. Dog fleas feed on the blood of their hosts, leading to discomfort, and they can also transmit parasites like tapeworms.

The life cycle of dog fleas includes eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Flea eggs typically fall from the host onto bedding or carpets. Larvae feed on organic debris and flea waste. Pupae develop inside cocoons and may remain dormant for months. Adult fleas can live for several weeks, constantly feeding and reproducing.

Sticktight fleas (Echidnophaga Gallinacea)

Sticktight fleas are often found on ground squirrels and poultry, where they attach tightly to the ears and eyes of their hosts, leading to irritation and health concerns. Pets that roam outdoors, especially in areas with ground squirrels, are at a higher risk. Regularly inspecting pets can help catch infestations early.

To control sticktight fleas, both the pet and its environment must be treated. It’s essential to treat pets and their bedding on the same day. Homes with outdoor pets should ensure thorough inspection and treatment of both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Our Flea Control Process is Simple

Flea Inspection

San Diego Pest Control’s flea service begins with a comprehensive inspection of your yard. We identify flea-prone areas, particularly those frequented by pets, to ensure a focused treatment approach. Our technicians review shaded areas and dense foliage, looking for flea activity.

Inside your home, we concentrate on common flea hiding spots such as baseboards, cracks, and crevices. Additionally, we inspect pet bedding, carpets, and furniture to make sure no potential flea habitats are missed. A complete inspection is essential for successful flea control.

Initial Treatment

Before we arrive for your flea treatment, please take these steps. Trim your lawn outside. Indoors, remove all items from the floors, such as toys and mats. Vacuum carpets, under beds, and closet floors, then throw away the vacuum bag. Sweep and mop all hard surfaces. Treat your pets and wash their bedding on the same day. Your home will need to be vacant for 2-3 hours while the treatment dries.

We start with a yard inspection, identifying and treating flea hotspots over up to half an acre. Indoors, liquid treatments are applied to baseboards, cracks, and crevices. We also treat floors and pet areas like cat trees. Floors may be slippery but will dry quickly. You can use fans or air movers to speed up the drying process.

Follow-Up Treatment

San Diego Pest Control includes a no-cost follow-up treatment two weeks after the initial flea treatment to ensure thorough elimination. This follow-up service is essential for targeting any newly hatched fleas. Our technician will conduct the same comprehensive treatment, focusing on all previously treated areas.

We recommend regular vacuuming and sweeping after the first treatment to help stimulate flea eggs to hatch, which enhances the effectiveness of the follow-up. Keeping your pets treated and their bedding clean is also vital in preventing future infestations.

San Diego Flea Control FAQs

Fleas are small, wingless insects that survive by feeding on the blood of warm-blooded animals like pets and humans. Their reddish-brown bodies are flat, helping them move easily through fur. Fleas cannot fly, but they can jump great distances thanks to their powerful hind legs.
Fleas bite both pets and people, resulting in red, itchy welts. These bites can lead to allergic reactions or infections from excessive scratching. Fleas are also known to carry diseases such as murine typhus and spread tapeworms.
Before treatment, remove all items from the floor and vacuum carpets, under beds, and inside closets. Dispose of the vacuum bag outside. After treatment, wait for the product to dry before vacuuming again. Treating pets on the same day as the flea treatment is essential to prevent reinfestation.
We recommend an initial treatment, followed by a second visit two weeks later, and another treatment two weeks after that. Ongoing services may be necessary to prevent future flea infestations.
